How to compare NBA players

  1. Choose the same season and competition. Regular-season and playoff samples answer different questions.
  2. Check the sample size and qualification rules. A small sample can make shooting efficiency look unusually strong or weak.
  3. Separate volume from efficiency. More makes can reflect more attempts, more games or a larger offensive role.
  4. Open the player profile and inspect shot location and shot type. Similar scoring averages can come from very different shot diets.
  5. Watch available film for the relevant possessions. Video availability varies; a missing clip does not erase the recorded play.

Common basketball stats explained

Points per game
Average points over the games in the selected sample. Always compare the same season and filters.
Field-goal percentage (FG%)
Made field goals divided by field-goal attempts. It measures shooting accuracy without giving extra weight to three-pointers.
Effective field-goal percentage (eFG%)
A shooting-efficiency measure that accounts for the extra point from a made three. Its formula is (field goals made + 0.5 × three-pointers made) ÷ field-goal attempts.
On/off splits
Compare team results with a player on court and off court. Teammates, opponents and lineup roles affect these results; on/off alone does not establish a player's individual impact.
Shot profile
The mix of locations and shot types a player or team uses. Read it alongside shooting efficiency and attempt volume.
